From idea to tree nursery with international appeal
The history of Smits Nursery is one of growing with both feet on the ground. By continuing to invest in craftsmanship, space and cooperation, we have expanded our range and our organisation step by step. Below, we take you through the key moments in our development.
Smits through the years

Start tree nursery
In 1994, the foundations were laid for Smits Nursery. What started as a small-scale initiative soon grew into a serious nursery with ambition.

Moving office and business to Molenschot
A few years later, we moved to Molenschot. A place where we found the space to continue building the company as it is today.

Purchase first Fendt 270
An important step followed in 1998: the purchase of the first Fendt 270 and the official establishment of Smits Boomkwekerij. A year in which the company really took shape.

Construction of new warehouse
The construction of a new production hall marked the next step in professionalisation and growth.

First time loading a double trailer
A day we won't soon forget. For the first time, two trailers were loaded in one day. It was busy at the loading bay, we found at the time.

Our machinery
A look at the machinery of the time. Fendt was already clearly represented.

New plant hall and logistics centre
This was followed a year later by the construction of a new plant hall and logistics centre. This further optimised our processes.

Purchase of land
In 2019, we further expanded our nursery with additional land to continue to grow in range and capacity.

Establishment of second location Smits Tree Nurseries Ltd Windsor

Construction of 3 hectares container field
The construction of the container field provided more flexibility and a wider offer for our customers.

Expansion of container field to 4 hectares
Soon the container field grew to 4 hectares, further strengthening our position.

Start of construction of 6.5 hectares of park
With the creation of a 6.5-hectare park, we are investing in the future and creating space for presentation and experience.

Deepdale Trees takeover
With the acquisition of Deepdale Trees, we are strengthening our position in the market and further building our international network.

Introduction coconut box
Packing clods with jute and wire basket has been the standard for decades. But it is heavy, labour-intensive work and increasingly difficult to fill in the current labour market. That is why we developed an alternative together with Van Tuijl Haaften: the coconut box.
Whereas we used to need 5 to 6 people for five hundred clods a day, now 2 employees process six hundred clods. More sustainable and future-oriented working.
