Topiary
Topiary brings structure, precision and character to gardens and landscapes. Through careful pruning and training, trees and shrubs are shaped into distinctive forms, from classic spheres and pyramids to impressive architectural specimens. These living features create rhythm, balance and visual interest in both traditional and contemporary designs.
At Deepdale Trees, we offer an extensive selection of topiary in different species, shapes and sizes. From compact ornamental forms to substantial semi-mature specimens, our range combines skilled cultivation with the individual character of each plant, providing distinctive options for private gardens and professional landscape projects.

Types of topiary
Topiary in different species
Topiary can be created from a wide range of trees and shrubs, although certain species are particularly well suited to regular clipping and shaping.
Evergreen species such as Taxus baccata and Ilex crenata are valued for their dense foliage and ability to maintain clearly defined forms throughout the year. Deciduous species such as Carpinus betulus and Fagus sylvatica offer a different character, with attractive branching structures and seasonal changes.
At Deepdale Trees, our topiary includes everything from simple geometric shapes to more elaborate trained specimens, offering flexibility for formal gardens, contemporary landscapes and architectural planting schemes.

Range of topiary
Our topiary
Our range includes topiary in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and species, from compact spheres and pyramids to substantial architectural forms and carefully trained trees.
Our nursery team regularly prunes and maintains these specimens to preserve their distinctive shapes and encourage healthy, balanced growth.
Deepdale Trees offers both field-grown and Air-Pot® container-grown topiary. Our Air-Pot® stock provides greater flexibility for planting throughout the year, with a dense, fibrous root system that supports successful establishment.
During the field-grown rootball season, generally from November to March, we can offer additional sizes, shapes and varieties through our own nursery and established network of European growers.
Whether you need a single statement specimen or a coordinated selection of matching shapes, our team can advise on available stock and suitable options.
Why topiary?
Structure, rhythm and architectural interest
Topiary introduces clearly defined shapes into a landscape, creating a distinctive relationship between planting and architecture. Its carefully maintained forms can bring order to a formal garden or provide an interesting contrast within a more naturalistic design.
Topiary is commonly used for:
- Formal and contemporary gardens
- Entrances, pathways and courtyards
- Architectural planting around buildings
- Private estates and commercial landscapes
- Repeated planting to create rhythm and symmetry
Individual specimens can act as focal points, while groups of matching shapes can establish a strong visual pattern within a larger design.
Unlike naturally growing trees and shrubs, topiary requires regular pruning to maintain its intended form. The frequency depends on the species, growth rate and desired finish.
Options
