Hedging Elements

Hedging elements, also known as instant hedging, are established plants that have been carefully grown and clipped over several years to create a dense, rectangular form. Once planted, they provide immediate structure, privacy and a well-defined appearance, without having to wait years for a traditional hedge to mature.

At Deepdale Trees, we specialise in high-quality instant hedging for gardens and landscape projects of all sizes. From formal Yew hedges to impressive Beech and Hornbeam specimens, our range offers a practical solution wherever immediate screening and a mature appearance are required.

Types of hedging elements

Instant hedging in different species

Our hedging elements are available in a variety of species, each with its own character, foliage and growth habits. Carefully maintained and regularly clipped, they develop the dense structure that makes instant hedging such an effective choice.

Whether you are creating a formal boundary around a private garden or introducing substantial green structure into a larger landscape, our team can help you find the right species and size.

Deepdale supplies instant hedging in a wide range of heights, from approximately 0.5 metres to substantial specimens exceeding 10 metres, depending on species and availability.

Our instant hedging

Our instant hedging is grown and maintained to create a well-established, densely branched structure before leaving the nursery.

Unlike smaller individual hedging plants, these specimens have already developed much of their intended shape and density, allowing them to create an immediate visual impact once planted.

Our range includes field-grown and container-grown stock, with Air-Pot® production providing additional flexibility for planting throughout the year.

We can also advise on the size, weight, rootball dimensions and delivery requirements of larger hedging elements, helping you plan installation with confidence.

Why hedging elements

Immediate privacy and established structure

Instant hedging is particularly suitable for projects where a finished appearance is important from the outset.

Because the plants have already been grown and clipped into shape, they can create a substantial green boundary immediately after planting.

Hedging elements are commonly used for:

  • Private gardens and country estates
  • Immediate privacy screening
  • Residential and commercial boundaries
  • Formal gardens with defined lines
  • Larger landscape and public realm projects

Evergreen species such as Taxus baccata and Prunus lusitanica provide year-round screening, while Beech and Hornbeam offer a more seasonal appearance.

Regular pruning helps maintain the desired shape and density, with the exact requirements depending on the species.

Options

Species, size and growing method

Choosing the right instant hedge depends on the required height, appearance, site conditions and planting programme.

Our hedging elements are available in different species and sizes, with both field-grown and container-grown options.

Field-grown stock is generally supplied between November and April, depending on weather and ground conditions. Air-Pot® container-grown hedging can be supplied throughout the year, offering greater flexibility for projects outside the traditional planting season.

The Air-Pot® system encourages a dense, fibrous root system and helps prevent root spiralling, supporting successful establishment after planting.

Our team can advise on the most suitable options for your project.
